Fireproof Home Safes – Fire Safes Guard Against the Unexpected
A fire can destroy everything in its path quickly and without warning. It is vitally important to any business or home to have a means to protect irreplaceable items in the event of fire. Fire safes are specially designed to withstand the high temperatures of fire and can give you peace of mind that your valuables are safe.
Fire safes are constructed with layers of insulating material that provide a barrier to the contents. This material expands with heat, which prevents water from firefighting efforts getting inside the safe. Fireproof ratings are provided to indicate the maximum temperature reached inside within a certain timeframe and are presented by the number of hours and temperature. For example, a fireproof rating of 2 hours at 350o F (176o C) specifies that the safe could be exposed to fire for up to 2 hours and not exceed a temperature of 350o F (176o C) on the inside.
There is a different fire rating for electronic media, since the temperature at which disks and tapes are destroyed is much lower that than of paper documents. The fire rating for media would need to be no more than 125o F (52o C). Make sure that you consider this when purchasing a fire safe. It may be a good idea to purchase a media safe if you will be storing backup copies of documentation on any type of electronic media source.
When purchasing a fire safe, ensure that it is rated fireproof by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). There are safes available that are only fire-resistant. These do not offer the protection that those officially rated fireproof by UL do. The ratings are generally classified by class A, B or C; A being the highest rating at four hours for exterior temperatures up to 2,000o F (1093o C).
Fire safes are often not suitable for theft resistance. There are safes available that combine the two features and you should pay close attention to ensure that you are purchasing a safe that meets both requirements if needed. Look for theft rating that indicates the safe has been tested for tampering resistance.
Fire is unpredictable and can cause devastating loss to important documents, valuables and mementos. If you want to safeguard these items, fire safes are the best way to do so. They provide the correct level of protection you need and can offer optional benefits of theft prevention and waterproof capability. Don’t let disaster take you by surprise and take away all of your hard-earned efforts and memories that are contained in your documents. Invest in a fire safe with an adequate rating to ensure that you are not left burned by consequence.
Fireproof safes safe for jewelry?
i just bought a fireproof safe for my expensive jewelry. after i brought it home i noticed the warranty said not to store pearls and watches in the safe because of the moisture. the safe also came with a silica gel packet to help dehumidify. i understand pearls and somewhat of the watches but now i'm worried that my white gold and other jewelry will tarnish and not be safe. has anyone been in this situation and do i have anything to worry about? also, how should i store my jewelry in this safe?
